Having just celebrated their one year anniversary, adelé is quickly becoming a household name in Lexington. The owners  Heather Reilly and Meghann van den Dool together have filled their store with some of the HAUTEST designers from across the globe guaranteed to please all design connoisseurs. They also offer interior design and graphic design services and have a well-stocked  design library open to trade professionals. HMS sat down with Heather and Meghann to find out more about their growing business and love of all lifestyle embellishments.

What inspired you to open your shop?

This has been a dream of our’s for a long time. Both of our mother’s are designers so we were brought
up surrounded by beautiful things. We felt like Lexington could use a store with a fresh perspective,
geared toward 20 – 40 somethings offering inspiring merchandise for home, gifts and accessories.

What do you look for in decor and accessories when buying?

Color and uniqueness. We always ask ourselves “would we have this in our home, or wear this with our
favorite outfit?” If the answer is yes, then we bring it in.

We also look for products with good value. To us value does not mean the cheapest item, but rather,
something that will be long lasting and affordable.

Favorite book / guide specific to decorating and styling your home?

We are avid readers of blogs. Some of our favorites are Knight Moves, Little Green Notebook, Elements
of Style, Belle Maison 23 and Apartment Therapy. And we still pull out old issues of Domino Magazine
for inspiration.

Share a few tips regarding balance, color, mixing styles / patterns, accessorizing, arrangements and
rule-breaking

We are not big followers of rules. You have to do what works for you and your style.

For home, we love the current trend of mixing patterns – for instance an easy and affordable way to
update a family room is to change out the pillows on the sofa, but don’t use matching pillows – do an
assortment of different sizes in punchy complimentary prints.

For fashion accessories, throw in pops of color. Nothing changes a crisp button down like a statement
necklace in a fun color and stacks of bold bangles. Accessories are an easy way to turn a boring outfit
into something fabulous.

Home you would love to style

Honestly, we love to decorate our own homes. We are constantly changing out accessories, light
fixtures, and adding new fabrics because we see so many new and amazing things every day – our
personal styles are constantly changing.

What inspired you to open Monkees?
Owning a clothing boutique is something I’ve dreamed about since high school. As a longtime shopper of other Monkee’s locations, I knew how well respected the name is in the southeast and wanted to be a part of something that has such a deep, successful infrastructure. Everytime I walked into another Monkee’s, I’d think to myself, “Lexington REALLY needs one of these!!”

I have to say I’m pretty obsessed with the Duchess of Cambridge, the beautiful and real Kate Middleton. She has such natural beauty, style, and grace. She’s grounded; she’s a real person! I love how she mixes vintage couture with today’s style trends. And I also love that she wears clothing more than once!!!

I can’t pinpoint one exact moment, but the opening weekend would be my most favorite time in the store. It was so exciting and encouraging to see so many people walk through the door! I was scared to death no one would show up!

There is no big secret to losing weight. It is all about two things: Calories and Activity.  Oh wait…and a little thing called WILL POWER! No one has the perfect body. However you can per-fect your own body to a level of ‘fit’ that makes you feel good and healthy! Now I would be lying if I said I diet healthy all the time. No I don’t. I have been known to skip a few (hundred) meals and count every single calorie that I consume…but I have also learned what works and what doesn’t…FOR ME. Having children really helps you figure out exactly what works.  Packing on the pounds during pregnancy – willingly or unwillingly – isn’t easy to shed. I have two boys and getting my pre-pregnancy body back was never easy, but I did do it and fairly quickly.

There are so many ‘guides’ out there on how to eat right, how to diet, how not-to-diet, how to count calories the right way, how to exercise, how to spot tone etc…etc….etc…. Here’s the deal – Spring Break roughly 60 days (give or take a few) away and it’s time to get serious. I do suggest counting calories and do something active everyday. And if you are going to be at a luncheon or dinner or event – just say no to the rolls, the butter, the cakes, the mini cupcakes etc…if you have ZERO will power…then the next day (or two) make up for it and be conscious of what you are consuming….and again get active!

Oh and this whole ‘treat yourself after a crazy hard workout’ – NO…DUH! Make smart food choices!
