Favorite vacation spot?
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC.
Favorite restaurant?
Bellini’s in Lexington and Charley’s Crab in Ft. Lauderdale.
Cocktail of choice?
Nuvo. It is a sparkling liqueur made of Vodka and sparkling wine. The only place in Lexington I can find it is Liquor Barn.
Favorite gift to give?
Books.
Favorite personal item?
Starbucks Sirena Espresso Machine. Since Starbucks isn’t open at 4 a.m., this is the next best way to get my skinny vanilla latte ‘fix’.
Favorite designer?
Elie Tahari.
How do you define style?
For me, style is about feeling good about yourself on the inside and expressing that on the outside.
Any style advice?
Wear high heels. They are the perfect accessory to any outfit, from jeans to dresses and make your legs look longer.
Top of your style/wardrobe wishlist?
A great pair of brown boots.
What’s in your beauty bag?
Bobbi Brown bronzing powder, Estee Lauder Bold Volume Lifting Mascara, Benefit Lemon Aid (great for dark circles), Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller (when you’ve had 4 hours of sleep but don’t want to look like it).
How do you define true luxury?
Being able to sleep past 4 in the morning!
Favorite mantra?
Pay it forward.
What motivates you the most?
I am motivated by a desire to make a difference whether it is in the lives of my husband and children or the viewers who watch my newscast. I believe I have a responsibility to give back because I have been given so much.
Who inspires you?
I am inspired by ordinary people overcoming great odds to do extraordinary things. One of my favorite stories is that of Adam Bender, the Lexington boy who didn’t let having one leg stop him from playing the sports he loves.
How did you “get into the business”?
My first job after college was working on the assignment desk at the London bureau of ABC News. I loved living in England and seeing how network news operated, but I longed to be in the field covering the news. So I came back to the U.S. and got my first on-air job at WYMT-TV in Hazard. I worked 12-hour days that included anchoring the morning news and shooting my own stories. I never looked back!
Did you always know you wanted to pursue a career in broadcast journalism?
Originally I thought I wanted to work in print journalism, but once I did an intership at a TV station in Cincinnati, I realized my true passion. I love the immediacy of TV news and working against so many deadlines instead of just one.
Any advice for young women dreaming of breaking into the industry?
If you do not have a passion for journalism and telling stories, find another profession. The hours and starting pay are bad, and the stress level is high. I see young women coming into the business who are more worried about being on television than being journalists, and they rarely last long in the business. The fact that I have lasted this long is due to a little luck and a lot of drive for a profession that is also my passion.
