Here Comes the Sun

March 30, 2007
A few must-haves before you hit the beach…

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic is an antioxidant-packed serum that both reduces past sun damage and provides unprecedented 8 times the skin’s natural photoaging protection.

Skinceuticals Sport UV Defense 45 is waterproof and sweatproof to deliver maximum protection and its ingredients are encapsulated in dimethicone to provide increased SPF with fewer chemicals, reducing the chances of irritation.

GlowFusion is the best self-tanner…it’s easy to apply, looks real (not orange or streaky) and dries in a flash (and doesn’t stink!). Just be sure to exfoliate before you apply!

Don’t neglect your hair…comb some Rene Furterer Hydro Nutritive Serum through before going for a swim in the pool or ocean…and try Fekkai Smooth Hair and Jonathan Flexible Hair Spray when going out in the evening to cut down on frizz in the humidity.

Protect the little ones’ fragile skin with Noodle and Boo’s Play-Day Sunscreen. This is the only sunscreen I use on my 2 year old…it is easy to apply (it goes on like a lotion, unlike some thicker creams that take forever to ’spread’ on) and really gives great protection!

Chip & Pepper turns 20!

March 27, 2007

Chip&Pepper, a brand popular with celebrities and shoppers the world over, celebrates their 20th year anniversary this year!

Once again the dynamic design duo of Chip and Pepper Foster has created the perfect pieces to spice up your spring wardrobe…including lots of cute shorts and minis. Let these be your motivation to squeeze in an extra spin-class!

Although sporting shorts doesn’t have to feel so revealing. When choosing a pair lean toward traditional styles with cuffed edges and button details to draw attention away from their diminishing length. Pair your shorts or micro mini skirt with a loose-fitting tee and blazer. A conservative top helps keep this sexy look savvy.

Stylin’

March 27, 2007

Hair…it can mean the difference between a good day and a frumpy baseball cap day.

Our new pal, Kristin, told me about some great new styling products from Biolage. I have been a fan of their hydrating shampoo & conditioner for years, and now I have some new faves to add to the list!

The Cera-Repair is a reparative conditioning treatment targeted at weak, overworked hair…perfect for those addicted to the straightening iron. Miraculous results in 5 minutes…and it comes in a little tube that’s perfect for travel.

Biolage Hydra-Seal Leave-In Conditioner…again, perfect for the straightening-iron-addicted. This is just right…not thick or heavy, it offers just enough moisture to keep the hair shiny and soft!

Biolage Smoothing gel is next…I straighten my curly hair 3x a week, and am always searching for the perfect product…I’ve tried serums, balms, and everything in between. This gel has the perfect amount of hold without being sticky or hard…Love it!!!

The perfect finish is the Color Care Shielding Shine Mist. This is no ordinary hair spray. It is the shine of a serum and the hold of a finishing spray in one, with added color protection. I will be buying a back-up of this!

Finding a Haute Hat for Derby!

March 24, 2007

“It’s not the shape of the woman’s face that really decides, but the attitude of the hat.”
Frank Olive

I love Frank Olive hats. The two I have are gorgeous. Unfortunately his hats aren’t very easy to find online. eBay is probably the best bet for a great Frank Olive hat.

There is nothing like the feeling of finding the perfect Derby hat!

Here are a few sites to help you with your search:

1. The Hat Society - a great site with links to nothin‘ but hats!

2. Hatgirl & Hatbaby - These hats are gorgeous! Very reasonably priced too. Here is a sneek-peek of just one of the many choices – (remember the Bruno Frisoni shoe and clutch….)

3. All You Need is Love, Hats and Veils - check these out! there are many gorgeous hats with biot feathers!

4. Maggie Mae Designs - tons of beautiful designs!

5. Hats in the Belfry - again, tons of beautiful choices and many large brim hats, my personal fave!

6. Hat-A-Tude - large gallery of great hats!

7. Gena Conti - gorgeous one of a kind hats

Kristi Martin, The Lexington Foundation, Inc.

March 22, 2007

HauteSpot Interview

Kristi Martin – Executive Director, Corporate Queen
The Lexington Foundation, Inc. 1504 College Way
Lexington-KY 40502 (859) 388-2620

Kristi Martin is one haute workin‘ momma! She has held many impressive executive positions throughout her professional career. Not to mention she is the mother of two boys; Max 6 and Brooks 19 months. How she balances it all, we will never know!

This year will mark her one year anniversary as executive director with the Foundation and she loves it! This affluent organization of women are truly impressive and amazingly dedicated to their mission. Mrs. Brenda Rice, president of the Foundation, founded it in 2004. Since then, they have awarded and pledged over $700,000 to cancer causes. Kristi also brings her extensive marketing and PR experience to help increase awareness of the Foundation both state and region-wide.

Side note: Kristi is also Hautemomma Jen Dotson’s Sister!

Favorite vacation spot?
Barcelona, Spain – It is very cosmopolitan, but charming and coastal at the same time.

Favorite restaurant (local or not)?
I love Jack Fry’s in Louisville. It has been there since the ‘30s – great atmosphere.

Style icon?
I have two, Katherine Hepburn and Cate Blanchett. Katherine Hepburn was never afraid to be herself. She was elegant, yet could pull off any outfit. I think Cate Blanchett is truly graceful with amazing style. She is always sophisticated and uses individual styling with a little trend. I love her quote “You can’t please everyone, but hopefully you will surprise some people.”

Favorite gift to give?
It depends on the person. I really like to give orchids or narcissus as gifts.

What’s in your beauty bag?
Right now, Mac “pinch me” blush, Mac “lucid” lipstick, Mac “spice” lip liner, Neutrogena pressed powder, Neutrogena cover stick, and Neutrogena lips gloss. Tweezers and a mirror (a must). Nail oil (instant manicure).

Favorite hotel (local or not)?
The Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina. My husband and I love the arts and crafts era. Built in this period, the hotel has the largest collection of this type of furniture in one location. The hotel overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains – amazing. And with the spa, it is a perfect getaway!

Cocktail of choice?
Red wine always. For a special treat – 1997 Duckhorn Merlot.

Style advice?
OK….whoever said “Life is not a fashion show” is crazy! Always care about how you look, even if you are just throwing on something to run to the grocery. No matter what, it will always make you feel better about yourself….and you never know who you might run into. Also, if I have learned anything over the years, it has come from my hautemomma sis Jen Dotson! Be true to your own individual style, but do not be afraid to experiment a little.

What is style?
Style is what makes you feel great about yourself. I think it all has to do with actually taking the time to care about what you are putting on.

What is at the top of your style / wardrobe wish list right now?
Tod’s handbag and Tod’s ballet flats

Favorite Mantra?
My husband’s grandmother had a saying “Live everyday as if was your last, but plan for 100 years”. Since hearing this, I always go back to it in everything I do. This applies to so many things in life – family, finance, health, our environment and so on!

What do you love most about non-profit work and what are some of the challenges you face?
I have been in the non-profit field over the past year as executive director of The Lexington Foundation, Inc. The Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer. It is very rewarding to know everyday I use my knowledge and skills to help others.

The non-profit world offers unique challenges one never faces in a corporate setting. My job is to encourage people to give to our cause. There are so many factors that affect giving – many other worthy organizations, changing economy, and more. The organization I work with raises funds mostly through events. My goal is to work consistently to reduce our cost so that the funds we raise go directly to cancer research, education, and care.

About The Lexington Foundation, Inc.
The Lexington Foundation is a nonprofit organization, whose mission is to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer. The board is comprised of fifty passionate women who work tirelessly for these efforts. Since its inception in 2004, the group has raised over $1.1 million dollars for cancer research, education, and care. To date over $700,000 has been awarded and pledged to many worthy cancer organizations – most of these organizations are located in central Kentucky. Funds are dispersed through a grants process. We accept requests through July of each calendar year. Grants are reviewed in August and recipients are notified in September. Funding is provided by the end of the calendar year.

The Foundations raises these funds through successful events, The Lexington Derby Ball and The Fall Wine Celebration. We also hold a medical symposium each fall for physician education. The symposium is dedicated to a cancer topic each year. The Foundation is planning to add a public cancer forum in the future.
